Pig Farming

Welcome to Xpert Pigs farm, located in the city of Lucknow in the state of UP. Xpert Pigs farm is spread over five acres of farm land housing 200 large white yokenshire pigs. The farm was established in February of 2010 with an initial inlay of 80 pigs. Currently our farm has 30 female sows that are pregnant and would deliver in the month of November bringing the total population of pigs to 500 by the end of this year. By the end of 2017 our farm will be in the position to supply 1000 finisher pigs on a monthly basis. We are also in planning stages to open retail chains to sell our pork to end consumers in the region.

Xpert Pigs farm was started with the intent of supplying high quality pork at affordable prices to all segments of the Indian society. Located in Lucknow in the state of UP our farm has been designed keeping in mind various aspects for healthy pork production. These aspects include the environment, timely vaccination, on site welfare of animals, in house vet, trained staff and an involved group of management staff.

Xpert Pigs farm is a wiener to finisher farm which means that we only sell our product once it reaches a live weight of 100-120 kgs which is usually at the age of 7-8 months. Utmost care is taken to insure that all animals maintain a healthy stress free life at the farm. A temperature between 21 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius is maintained in all pens housing pegs during summer and winter months. Utmost care is given to hygiene within the pig farm, and all pens along with animals are washed three times daily during the summer months and twice daily during the winter months. All products used for cleaning the pens are 100% organic and utmost care is given to insure that no chemicals are used within the pens where the animals are housed.

All employees working or farm help working directly with pigs are previous owners of small scale pig farms (5-10 animals). We have put them through an extensive animal husbandry course for three months to insure that they are aware about all aspects of running a professional intensive pig farm. Presently we are employing four individuals for cleaning feeding and bathing the pigs on a daily basis. All employees have a thorough knowledge of animals and maintain stringent record keeping of when and how much the pigs were fed.

Record keeping is one of the biggest challenges on a farm. Various records have to be kept, such as when a sow (female pig) mated, what was her litter size, how feed is being given to various animals, administering various medications, tagging the pigs so that no inbreeding takes place, and keeping records of average weight gain from birth to market weight. All administrative staff also has their offices on the farm which makes record keeping and cross checking easy.

In the next ten years it is predicted that the total consumption of meat in India will double from its present numbers. As per capita income of individuals rises, they tend to spend on improving their lifestyle and food consumption habits. Pork consumption is negligible in India, with the exception of the north east while it is a major item elsewhere. In the European Union, 42.6 kg pork is consumed per person every year, while in the US, 29.7 kgs are consumed. Pork is a staple for Chinese, and so over 35 kg are consumed per person per year. India’s consumption levels (currently 5.35 pg/ annum) are so low that it can only be explained by low incomes and high relative prices. The total world consumption of meat is estimated to be of the order of 240 million tons per annum and India’s share of consumption is only 2.2%.
